Finding That Perfect Countertop

Counters as a surface, are most used in kitchens, but their presence in bathrooms also cannot be completely negated. Though playing a minimal role, they still act as a foundation that lends a bathroom its predominant character. In kitchens, counters take most of the grind. Be it cutting, chopping, kneading or accommodating spills and the various appliances and fixtures. In bathrooms, they are just there as a subtle presence and a defining feature.

Once installed, the countertops, especially in kitchens, are extensively used and are often overlooked and not given much attention. It is only overtime that we realize that certain aspects of the counter material are susceptible to excessive usage.

There can be many other considerations and concerns about the countertop but the primary one is always about the material that the countertop is made of. We, at Blue Bath, want to empower people to build their dream kitchen or bathroom with correct information just a click away. So, here’s a list of various countertop materials and why you should opt for them.

Kitchen Counter

Natural Stone Options – Natural stone counters are usually carved out of granite, soapstone and marble. To talk of granite, it is highly durable and resistant to water, heat, scratches, and stains. A granite slab is easy to clean and comes in a variety of colors and finishes. Go in for a polished, sandblasted, brushed or a flamed look.

If you are not really fond of the glossy hardbound granite and want a softer natural stone, then soapstone might just fit the bill. Use it freely and just simply sand or buff it to get rid of any traces of usage overtime. The smooth matte finish can also be maintained by coating the counter surface with a recommended mineral oil. Not just this, the stone even ages gradually, sounds quite classy, right?

Even classier material is the timeless white shine of marble. Easily available and costing much less than other natural stone alternatives, opt for marble if you are fine with putting in some effort for maintaining the slightly porous countertop.

Laminate – If affordability is your only criteria while thinking of a kitchen slab, then a laminate counter is your best bet. Not the most durable option or made for spaces with a lot happening, a laminate shelf can last you a minimum of 10 years if adhered to the recommended precautions to prevent, chipping, cracking, staining and, scratching.

Concrete – An unconventional choice with a raw appeal, the concrete countertops of today can be customized with colors and textures to match the existing interiors. Tough enough to stand the everyday wear and tear, concrete needs to be sealed or restored every 1-3 years to make it long-lasting.

Eco-Friendly Variants – Anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties are a must when talking about a kitchen or bathroom. Places where the highest amount of hygiene is required, what better than wooden counters to combat germs and microbes. Though high on maintenance, wooden counters lend a given space warmth, much needed for people with homes in the frigid zone.
